BIO

Kimberly Duncan is a photographer whose work explores the spirit of the American West through minimalist lens. Raised in North Carolina, she relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the region’s landscapes and culture inspired a new creative direction.

With a BFA in Studio Art and Environmental Studies from Colgate University, Duncan began her career working in mixed-media (painting/drawing) before shifting her focus to film photography in 2020. Her background in fine art informs her experimental processes, including film souping and encaustic techniques, which add texture and depth to her imagery.

Since 2017, she has worked in fine art galleries in New York, North Carolina, Santa Fe, Scottsdale, and Jackson Hole—experiences that not only shaped her artistic perspective but also supported her travels across the West. Duncan’s photography often highlights small-town Americana and familiar Western subjects, transforming them into timeless, contemplative compositions.

STATEMENT

My photographic practice began as a search for presence, an attempt to reclaim connection to both myself and my surroundings. Each morning, armed with my Konica Auto Reflex tC, I committed to capturing a single detail: a shadow, a weathered sign, a crack in the sidewalk. These small acts of attention evolved into a meditation, teaching me that meaning often resides in the quiet, overlooked corners of our world.

Through my lens, I translate the stillness and subtle beauty of the Western landscape, seeking out weathered windows, forgotten structures, and fleeting vignettes that hold the resonance of memory. Viewed through a minimalist aesthetic, these subjects—ordinary by nature—are reframed as sites of reverence, encouraging us to pause and look more closely.

My work strives to cultivate renewed appreciation for the familiar. By isolating and elevating fragments of everyday life, I aim to draw viewers into a deeper awareness of their own surroundings, revealing the extraordinary within the ordinary.
